Before starting with the concept of Ecological footprint, students will analyze in detail the amount of natural resources involved in their daily life.

Students will start with a question: How are you using the planet?. By listing exhaustively all the things (stuff, devices, clothes, food, electronic gadgets, furniture, …... ) that they buy, consume and use every day, students will start thinking where all this stuff comes from, what the impact of different styles of life and how people are using the planet; they will discover what the concept of natural resources means in their own lives.

The aim is to visualize the idea that our modern society relais on wasting nature till a point that the future of the planet could be in danger because of our over-exploitation of natural resources and pollution.

The first workshop is about comparing two really different styles of life: a woman in Africa and a woman in New York.
Tasks always involve inquiring our life style and researching both household and neighborhood . The target will be cover when students, working in teams, discuss and reflect their finding in outcomes and share with the partners the new ideas. Students have to think about ways to reduce their impacts.

(a) Working in groups, students have to:

    • discuss and answer the question: who needs nature most?.
    • identify needs of the two women and the natural resources they get from the environment.

(b) Students will work out what all the things these people use every day are made of. Where does this stuff come from? What kind of natural resources are involved in each case?. Working in groups they will:

    • trace back different things and goods, finding out the processes involved in manufacturing.
    • look into mining in their region, digging deeper into the use of natural resources to provide them with all the goods and stuff they use everyday
    • reflect about the impacts of their lifestyle on the environment .

(c) Later students will analyze the role of the water in making stuff, water consumption and energy at home. Workshops for analyzing water and energy used in food production and transportation are also proposed. All these workshops are focused on the students daily life and the impact on the associated impact on the planet.
